When I headed out to Las Vegas the day after turning 21, I had no idea that I was starting a tradition.
However, as any Vegas lover knows, once you’re hooked, you’re always looking for a good excuse take another trip.
Weddings/honeymoons/anniversaries are a common reason, but those aren’t in the cards (much to my grandma’s chagrin/resigned acceptance). A birthday, though, is a great excuse! And it happens every year.
Fortunately for me, my birthday falls right after the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and smack dab in the middle of off-peak season, so it’s very easy to get affordable flights and hotels.
The festivities and the cast have changed each year, but the important things have remained the same. Mainly that I always find myself surrounded by good friends who (however begrudgingly) support my degeneracy and help me find some new debauchery.
As I have grown older (but not more mature), a few traditions have developed. Namely, wearing a gaudy birthday boy button, a happy birthday tiara, and dauning a sash.
While there’s lots to love about this tradition, my favorite part is that my friends know where to find me. I’ve been lucky enough to celebrate with Costas, Eugene, Mac, and Alicia; some of my favorite people, in my favorite place. It truly doesn’t get better.
It’s hard to believe that I’m already celebrating my 5th Annual Destination Birthday Party in Las Vegas this year. I very much look forward to celebrating many more, while never growing old!
In the coming weeks, I look forward to waxing nostalgic over all of my youthful hijinks the second week of January during #Viva’sAnnualDestinationBirthdayPartyInLasVegas.
